Monteverdi Marittimo
“Risiede sul dorso di un poggio che propagasi da libeccio a grecale da quelli di Campiglia e della Sassetta fra la Sterza di Cecina e il torrente Massero tributario del fiume Cornia… Uno dei documenti più curiosi, se non più importanti, relativamente ai limiti territoriali della Comunità in discorso, io ritengo sia quello del 31 marzo 1296 esistente fra le pergamene della Comunità di Volterra. Trattasi ivi dell'esame giuridico di testimoni scelti fra i vecchi abitanti di Monteverdi, del Sasso, della Leccia, Serazzano e Castiglion Bernardi, castelli tutti del contado volterrano, che fiancheggiavano in Val di Cornia da più lati il territorio comunitativo del distrutto Castel di Cornia, per riconoscerne i perduti confini”.
Monteverdi Marittimo, a fortified town immersed in the flourishing nature of the southern slope of the Metallifere Hills, is a place where peace and tranquility are breathed through its "wrinkles", the dense network of streets that meander in the historic centre. Its tranquility is combined with the charm of the countryside, the one found at the feet of the ruins of San Pietro a Palazzuolo Benedictine Abbey, or, even more so, in the heart of the natural reserve of Monterufoli-Caselli: here, among waterfalls, rock outcrops and deep woods, one can meet typical animals of the Mediterranean forest, such as the “Cavallino di Monterufoli”, a lovely, small but strong and resistant horse.

Mineral landscapes and hydrothermal springs complete the image of this suggestive territory where every year the “Maggerini” celebrate a propitiatory rite in the countryside with their chants, accompanied with the good wine of the Pisan hills. The “Francigena Mare” and the “Grand Tour della Valdelsa-Valdicecina” constitute the two most important routes for road, gravel but also mountain bike lovers. But it is inevitable to try to go through the evocative itinerary “Val di Sterza e Foresta di Caselli”, for a real, natural immersion with a suitable bike. For road lovers, the “Anello di Canneto + Montecatini da Gello” offers further adventurous insights.
