This ring route of 70 km addresses 3 of the most suggestive climbs of Val di Cecina on panoramic roads, with extraordinary views on the valley, for a total descent of 1.415 m. We are in the heart of the “Devil Valley”, where geothermal activity has been going on for millions of years. An area where columns of vapor rise from the ground with “blows” of fluids that can reach temperatures up to 160°C. The vapors, along with the boiling waters, form a unique and suggestive panorama that recalls lunar landscapes, or maybe Iceland, or even the imaginary Inferno, since it is said that Dante Alighieri drew inspiration from these very places for his Divine Comedy.
The bike experience is certainly unique, and one of those that remain engraved in one’s memory forever. The route, done in a single day, may result demanding and therefore it is not excluded to cover it in two stages, maybe with an overnight stop in Montecatini Val di Cecina to leave again, fresh and rested, towards Pomarance, without missing a great day stop in Volterra. It may take some time, but time should be spent well and Volterra is an ideal destination.
