Founded in Etruscan times to connect Cortona to the sea through Amiata, it underwent modifications in Roman times until it was completely diverted in the face of the Val di Chiana swamping in the ninth century.
In 1775 the Grand Duke Leopold II restructured the road to Montepulciano and Siena that, to distinguish it from the ancient route of Lauretana, was called Strada Regia Lauretana.
However, today's route that leads from Siena to Cortona has been recognized as one of the «Tuscan Ways» and, connected to the Francigena way and to Sentiero della Bonifica, it is going to become an important path for pilgrims and excursion enthusiasts.
The bike path follows most of the route with some variations aimed at an easy access by bike, which must also be suitable for challenging stretches of dirt road.
Six are the stages proposed without detracting from those who want to consume in a single day the 114 km with over 2000 meters of difference in height.
