Barbarossa tour

Every year in June, San Quirico d’Orcia reenacts the historical meeting between the most powerful man of the 12th century Federico of Hohenstaufen, also known as Barbarossa, and the envoys from Pope Adrian IV. Barbarossa, who was on his way to Rome in order to be crowned as sovereign of the Holy Roman Empire, was given the pass upon the delivery into the hands of the Cardinals of the heretic Arnaldo da Brescia, having taken refuge with the Visconti, lords of the castle of Campiglia d'Orcia and of the fortification of Campigliola. The heretic was captured near the Briccole in Val d'Orcia and executed. Frederick I of Swabia was then crowned in St. Peter's Basilica.

This is how things worked in 1155, but it is perhaps convenient, so as not to provoke long debates that can distract from pedaling, not to go into the merits. The cyclist only needs to know that Barbarossa's route passes through all the probable locations of Arnaldo da Brescia's search and, done in a single day, can be quite challenging, as was the "heretic hunt". The most challenging part of the stage is the first up to km 27 when reaching the 1,108 metres of Poggio Seragio. Even if the road surface is mostly asphalt, it is recommended to use a gravel or a good touring bike.

From San Quirico d'Orcia to Bagno Vignoni the journey is short and easy. The famous thermal waters of Bagno Vignoni, the loggia and the chapel of Santa Caterina are enough to grant a stop of great charm.

The medieval village, well preserved with its picturesque streets and ancient churches, is to be enjoyed entirely with the due calm and curious attention. For those who happen to be here on the night of the 1st of May, the meeting with the Maggiaioli is a unique experience.

Castiglione d'Orcia is closely connected to Rocca d'Orcia and therefore, with its Rocca Aldobrandesca and the beautiful Pieve dei Santi Stefano e Degna, constitutes a fascinating stop before facing the real climb. Here, we can find comfort in one of the hospitable restaurants custodians of the delicacies of the Val d'Orcia: pecorino cheese, honey and, during autumn, mushrooms and chestnuts.

We take the beautiful panoramic road that leads to Vivo d'Orcia with views of the "Poggi Pelati". It is the direction that leads to Vetta Amiata and the Point is located in Vivo d'Orcia, the town of the famous Vivo aqueduct, where we can stop for a regenerating stop. But rest cannot be an excuse to miss a visit to the Ermicciolo or, if in good company, a stop at the small stone “lovers” bridge.

The journey gets easier once past the pass, always keeping a high altitude among dense chestnut forests and wonderful beech forests. Once a hospice for pilgrims and travellers along the Via Francigena, Le Briccole once belonged to Camaldolese monks and also hosted Matilda of Canossa. In Sigeric's itinerary, the locality called Abricula represented the XI stage.

After crossing the Orcia river, on the right is the historic Quercia delle Checche, recognized as Italy's first Green monument. Not very far is the Lucciola Bella Nature Reserve. Pienza, situated on top of a beautiful hill, awaits the cyclist. Described as the “ideal city” of the Renaissance, it takes its name from Enea Silvio Piccolomini who became pope with the name of Pius II. The historic center of Pienza, inscribed in the World Heritage List since 1996, preserves artistic treasures of great value and curiosity, such as the Pieve dei Santi Vito e Modesto, known as Pieve di Corsignano, and the Pieve del Serpe Regolo. The latter was named after the king of snakes, a guardian of fabulous treasures, because of the presence of carved snakes on one of its columns.
