The route allows you to discover the beauties of three of the capitals of Senese Chianti. Two of them, Radda in Chianti and Castellina in Chianti, offer, with their charming and historic villages and thanks to their agricultural and touristic activities, a mix of opportunities for a stay made of art, nature and good living. In this context, Castelnuovo Berardenga is represented by two towns, Quercegrossa and Vagliagli, well centered in the core of Chianti.

Its 61km, 1.260m of elevation gain and many dirty roads make this path surely demanding, but the beauty and safety of the roads, the distinctive agricultural landscapes, the villas and farms of the nineteenth century, the castles scattered through the territory and the Etruscan testimonies like Tumulo of Montecalvario, not far from Castellina in Chianti, and Poggino Necropolis met along the road going from Vagliagli to Fonterutoli, make this route an unique occasion to spend a day surrounded by amazement and wonder.

An easy stage, thanks to its brevity, that from Radda in Chianti leads to Castellina in Chianti. After leaving the city centre you take the Croce dirt road, followed by the SR429 that leads you to the SR222 at kilometer number 8.70. A beautiful and well-kept road that gently climbs up, between woods and vineyards, up to 617 meters, and then descends close to the crossroad. The Point is situated in the centre of Castellina in Chianti. It is advisable to take a walk in Via delle Volte, the suggestive walkway on the city walls designed by Filippo Brunelleschi.

A medium difficulty stage that, after leaving the SP51 road, takes the dirt road to La Leccia castle and then, descending through a typical Chianti landscape, meets ancient houses and small towns, partly turned into hotels. Isola Serena, Cornia, Corgnino and Vallechiara anticipate the way back to asphalt roads, quickly left to take a white road heading to Montelupo and then followed by a road called “gravel paradise”, until you eventually meet the asphalt of the Quattro Vie again, leading you to the mill anticipating the Quercegrossa Point.

And now it gets better, from every point of view, since the beauty already seen is added to the fatigue of the 503 meters climb of Vagliagli’s Point, the town of wine and garlic. The white road goes up through Petroio until you reach the village of Cignano, placed in the highest spot, and then goes down in Vagliagli’s direction, already visible from the square where the monument in honor of the partisan Bruno Bonci, the Chianti “Caravaggio” killed by the germans during the last war, in situated. Very short route, beautiful but very challenging.

Another climb to head back to Radda in Chianti. From Vagliagli you go back on your tracks along the lonely road leading to Poggio Serravalle, where you surpass 600 meters of altitude and find the dirt roads again that, before meeting Fonterutoli and its asphalt, you get to know with the five tombs of the Poggino necropolis. Up to the doors of Castellina in Chianti, in Croce Fiorentina more precisely, you deviate again on a white road, the Mandorlo road. Now you descend with forests, vineyards and olive trees alternating in a landscape dotted with farms and beautiful farmhouses. The slope starts again when meeting with the Eroica route, accompanying you to Radda in Chianti, where the occasions to recover from the fatigue with a dish of ribollita and a glass of wine are plenty.
