20T2 Cacciaconti tour

The ancient noble Cacciaconti family, whose origins date back to the feudal consortium of Berardenga, settled in numerous castles in the Sienese area:  Asciano, Serre di Rapolano, Scrofiano, Farnetella and Trequanda, just to name a few.

Among the various characters of the family there is the well-known Ghino di Tacco and the less known Caccia d'Asciano who joined the «Spendereccia Brigade» of Siena, dispersed, as Dante recalls in the Divine Comedy, «the vineyard and the great frond».

The bike route, which allows you to get to know most of the Cacciaconti residences, is relatively easy and all on paved road.

The Crete and the splendid gullies are a strong characterizing element and accompany the cyclist along the entire journey.

From Asciano, historic center of Crete and home of the Cacciaconti, you can move but also stay a while because there are many attractions, from two wonderful museums: Palazzo Corboli and Cassioli.

For those who decide to leave by bike, the road of Pecorile is of great beauty and allows you to admire the expanse of the «sea of land of Accona»
At the top of the easy climb, it would not be a mistake to make a detour to Chiusure, the village of the artichoke, which guards the biancane and the gullies that overlook the Abbey of Monte Oliveto Maggiore.

From San Giovanni d'Asso, the center of the truffle harvest with its imposing castle, we turn towards Montisi, the characteristic village of Grancia and olive oil, and then take a lonely road that descends and then climbs, with double-digit slopes, to Castelmuzio, a small medieval pearl that anticipates, through a spectacular road, the view of Petroio, an equally suggestive village known for the manufacture of terracotta and where you can visit the Museum of history and technique. We are inside the demure beauty of the countryside between Crete and Val di Chiana.

At Madonnina dei Monti you reach the maximum altitude of 548 meters above sea level and, with a detour from the steep main road towards a beautiful stretch adorned with woods and olive groves, you reach the GATE of Trequanda, an ancient village rich in history dominated by the majestic castle of the Cacciaconti family.

From Trequanda you take a lonely and suggestive secondary road that allows you to admire in the background Castelnuovo Grilli, the mysterious castle of Gallico and other solitary houses and farms. The curious could also be tempted to deviate towards the Belsedere farm where it is possible to find excellent cold cuts. The small station of Trequanda, where today only the «Treno Natura» passes through, is a captivating place to meditate and stop before heading back to find the road of Pecorile and follow it until you get back to Asciano where you will be spoiled for choice to eat. The advice is to try some delicacies of the village of Garbo such as the fragrant cacio pecorino and a nice dish of pasta produced locally with oil and truffle.
