Berardenga Tour

Castelnuovo Berardenga is known as the «butterfly of the Grand Duke» for the enviable characteristics of a territory inside two wings enhanced by a variety of environments representing the best synthesis of what the Sienese can offer. The Chianti, the Crete and the Sienese hills, as well as a part of the Ambra valley which, from the Ombrone, leads to the Arno. Honestly, we could not expect more and better from the creator if not a strip of sea and a high and snowy mountain. But it would have been too much to ask and, after all, it would have put at risk the harmony of the places that hosted the waters of an ocean during the Pliocene. The fossils of «Lamna nasus», a prehistoric shark found in the countryside of Castelnuovo between the hills of Chianti and the Val d'Arbia, are good evidence of this.

The roads of the Berardenga ring therefore unravel in such beauty and offer the most beautiful honeymoon that the bride and groom, Chianti and Crete, can do in one day and then be able to retire in one of the many thalami immersed in nature that Castelnuovo offers with great generosity.

The route is entirely on paved roads with low traffic and can be done with any type of bike. Despite the continuous ups and downs does not involve particular difficulties. Also for this reason it is proposed in only two stages that do not prevent taking the stops you like in the POINT of San Piero, Villa a Sesta and San Gusmé, without neglecting that the GATE of Pianella is located not far from the route, from which you can decide to take other routes from Eroica and the two suggestive proposals of gravel rings, Berardenga and Chianti.

The stage, short and quite easy, allows us to immerse ourselves in the part of the Berardenga territory, which first touches the Val d'Arbia and then runs into the foothills of the Crete Senesi. The beautiful road that descends to Colonna del Grillo passes by the villa and the farm of Sestano, once a sacred place for hunting. From the gullies of Canapaia it turns again towards Castelnuovo to bend in the direction of Guistrigona, visited by Hannibal with his elephants on his way to Rome. Casetta and Acqua Borra can be reached from the highway's coplanar road, the only rare stretch in the plain. Acqua Borra, a miraculous thermal spring and ancient thermal garden of Siena, is located at the foot of what was the site of the famous battle of Monteaperti between the Sienese and the Florentines. Not far away is the church and chapel of Sant'Ansano da Siena.

At San Piero in Barca the vineyards return and become denser and denser throughout a ring that allows you to admire farms and villages of great value as Bossi, San Felice, Castell'in Villa and Villa a Sesta, the country of «Dit'unto», the street food of great success. On the way back, the intact medieval village of San Gusmé is worth a visit. In San Gusmé it is recommended to find time for a detour to the farmhouses and the outstanding agricultural and natural environment of Arceno with its cypress-lined avenues and the park with the small lake, which unfortunately cannot be visited today. The road to Castelnuovo Berardenga is now particularly scenic and the Lombard tower of Pieve a Pacina, the site of the ancient bloody clash between the bishops of Siena and Arezzo to establish the boundaries of the dioceses, is round and close to the GATE. Castelnuovo has everything you need to be able to rest and have a good meal based on panzanella, free-range chicken and good Chianti wine.
