Simboli di San Quirico gravel

A grove of cypress trees united in a magic circle makes one of the most photographed images in the world. The Cappella di Vitaleta, framed between two lines of cypresses, with its name “la vita laeta”, recalls a life as happy and tranquil as its iconic landscape. The pool of water that constitutes the heart of Bagno Vignoni, a village like no other in the world. The Horti Leonini, a Renaissance garden of Italian style situated inside ancient walls, a place of rest for pilgrims of the Francigena. These are the symbols of San Quirico d’Orcia, which all deserve to be experienced in a journey of great charm. All types of bikes are fine, but they better be well prepared to stop frequently and for a long time, waiting for their cyclist engrossed in such beauty.

After leaving San Quirico d'Orcia, we take the SP 146, a road with a great view on the places and cypress trees from the famous “Gladiator”. On one side the Inferno farm and on the other the church of the Rosario. The dirt road is located at the entrance to the Vitaleta road, which we leave shortly after to take the Croce di Prata road. To avoid getting lost, it's best to follow the direction to Molino di Tuoma and, after a short but very challenging climb (in Tuscan “pettata”) to pass Celamonti and the Torrenieri lookout, a famous cypress grove located on the opposite side of the Cassia state road comes into view.

Having overcome the contemplative amazement, we take the white road of the Francigena towards San Quirico d'Orcia, reaching the abandoned church of the Madonna del Regente. After passing the village, we take the Ripa d'Orcia road and then join the Vignoni road, where we reach the highest point right in Vignoni. The panorama is superb and a single glance is enough to take in the uniqueness of the Val d'Orcia. Now all that remains is to head down towards Bagno Vignoni to enjoy the charm of its thermal waters, underground mills, and the loggia of Santa Caterina and relax with a stop at the village's typical restaurants.

To reach the third gem of San Quirico d'Orcia, we must dive in the lunar and wild landscape that the prehistoric sea has left. Gullies and biancanas are dotted with cypress trees and farms, solitary and in good health. We continuously go up and down until coming across, at km 26, past the Ginestreto farm, the road leading to the Vitaleta car park, located at km 29. It only takes a few hundred meters to reach the Chapel and its cypress trees. We have reached a place from which one would never depart from, so much is the harmony that reigns there and the peace that one breathes. The way leading to the SP 146 road lives up to the landscape and helps to preserve a good memory. We finally arrive once again in San Quirico d'Orcia, with its magnificent sixteenth-century garden designed by Diomede Leoni, the Horti Leonini. Here, we can long stop and rest as pilgrims or travellers once did.
