Castellina in Chianti overlooks a territory made of vineyards, forests and wild animals from its tall hill. In this zone, the Etruscan have left numerous tracks, once a point that connected the ports of the Tyrrhenian Sea (Vulci, Vetulonia and Roselle) with the cities to the north. The proposed route, with its 64km and an elevation gain of 1300m, is named after the famous rooster, symbol of the classic territory of Chianti.
Castellina and the Fonterutoli district mark the border set in the thirteenth century between Siena and Florence that, tired of the constant wars, assigned two knights to define the limits of their domains with the understanding to start from their respective cities at the crowing of the rooster. The black rooster sang before the white Senese one and, therefore, went further.
This tale, between legend and reality, allows the most expert cyclists to play and confront each other on the Strolla uphill to try to win and “sing” before the opponent and be considered a rooster.
There are three stages on paved roads obtained in this route.
