A real adventure to go in the direction of Monte San Michele. The Chianti mountain is climbed in its most solitary and wild part and deserves to be observed in all its beauty. One reaches 881 from the summit and then starts going down, but climbs up again in the stretch that leads to Panzano. A pretty short route with considerable difference in altitude but with slopes never exceeding 10%.

From Greve in Chianti to Villa San Michele you always climb: in 10 km you make 653 meters of difference in altitude at an average slope of 6.5%. The vineyards soon leave space for the dense forest as you approach the Canonica di Greve. Going up, you arrive in the vicinity of the Croce di Monte Domini placed on an homonymous hill. The iron cross, the only one still intact from the destruction of the church of San Salvatore during the last war, dominates the valleys of Chianti and Valdarno and offers a spectacular landscape. The summit is not far away, where a reception structure that seems to be made especially for outdoor lovers awaits for the adventurous cyclist. Villa San Michele has a beautifully equipped area, a shop, an inn and available beds in a hostel or hotel for a well-deserved rest.

It takes courage to leave Villa San Michele, not so much for the difficulties of the journey that, at least for 10 kilometers is almost completely downhill, but for the amenity of the place that you have to reluctantly leave. Fortunately, at the edge of the forest, announced by beautiful vineyards, you meet the village of Volpaia "beautiful to see and eat," as someone in the mood for witty jokes would say. So this stop, before starting to go up again, is really appropriate. In Pieve Aldina and then in Castelvecchi you meet asphalt again in a solitary road, to then find a beautiful white road in Casalbosco. We are now near Panzano in Chianti and also Greve in Chianti is not that far away. From Panzano to Greve the trip is pure rest for the legs, but not for the eyes since you see and look for beauty everywhere. The dirt road running along the SR222 road allows you to pass by Vignamaggio, a beautiful late medieval architectural complex with farmhouses and a  Renaissance villa. Here we are, Greve is just around the corner, waiting to welcome the cyclist with a good meal.
