Casole - Pievescola cycle tour

Departing from the medieval town of Casole d'Elsa, headquarter of an important Bike Hub,  this route offers a fairly easy journey, but not too easy. A journey within reach of all, that from the Val d'Elsa touches the slopes of the mystical and mysterious Montagnola where, between parish churches, castles, dense forests and unexplored caves, you can see the famous yellow marble quarries, the Broccatello.

The route is entirely on paved roads, generally low traffic. Two are the stages that can allow the most greedy to stop in the town of the mushroom, Pievescola.

The first stage of this route is easy and mainly covers the countryside. You will see farms and small, ancient villages such as Mensanello where, not far, the watercourse of the Strulli feeds the Elsa River’s water. Le Caldane, ancient Etrusco-Roman baths and the Via Francigena are situated not far from here.
From Scorgiano, the road becomes solitary while cycling through the Montagnola and its forests, until reaching Pievescola, the lively town marked by the monument dedicated to the “mushroom in love”, by the presence of the ancient parish church of San Giovanni Battista and by the imposing Villa La Suvera, an historical renaissance building.

The second stage of the journey is undoubtedly more challenging since, past Capannino alla Suvera, you will have to climb up to the town of Mensano, situated 495 metres above sea level. The uphill is constant and beautiful, with a few short double-digit stretches. Mensano, a medieval village longly disputed between Siena and Firenze, appears with its crescent urban profile. From Mensano you can look up to the Metalliferous Hills. Leaving Mensano you descend and then go back to Casole d'Elsa.
The scenery, marked by the surrounding hills, is one of great charm and suggests the cyclist to take it slow and still be capable of enjoying an appropriate stop at the end of the route.
