Via Romea Sanese, Variante Ghibellina

The Ghibellina variant could only lead to Siena for a visit to its beauties.

The route, except for the passage through the city, consists mainly of dirt roads up and down between the hills of Siena and the foothills of the Crete.

The village of Arbia is an important place because as it meets via Lauretana that can be a pleasant diversion. The hill of Monteaperti and the Acqua Borra are the points of conjunction with the Guelfa variant. But today it is better to avoid any clash.

From Siena you exit reluctantly and take the ups and downs of the rolling hills that lead to the territory of Crete Senesi.
In Taverne we meet the river Arbia remembered by Dante Alighieri with the famous phrase «the great slaughter and havoc, that dyed the Arbia red». At the GATE of Arbia we meet Via Lauretana and then turn towards Monteaperti where a pyramid has been erected in memory of the battle between the Sienese and the Florentines, to finally reach Acqua Borra where the well-known healthy waters flow.
