Via Romea Sanese, Variante Guelfa

The Guelfa variant runs along the roads that led the Florentine army from Chiantigiana to Monteaperti where the famous battle remembered by Dante Alighieri in the Divine Comedy was fought.

The route, mostly on paths and dirt roads, leads from Quercegrossa to Pievasciata where historians say that the Florentines made a stop so that even today one of the streets bears the name «via delle Salmerie».

Leaving behind farms and castles and crossing the Arbia River, the route reaches the pyramid of Monteaperti and then Acqua Borra, a thermal spring where many wounded were treated and today an oasis of peace.

We follow the tracks that the Florentine army left in 1260 to approach Siena in the famous battle of Monteaperti. The roads are particularly suggestive and rich in important historical testimonies such as Vagliagli, Certosa di Pontignano, Villa Geggiano and Pievasciata, where «via delle Salmerie» testifies to the Florentine encampment.

The route becomes gentler as we enter the clay hills where the hill of the battle of Monteaperti dominates the cultivated fields and the nearby spring of healing waters of Acqua Borra, where many soldiers wounded in the bloody battle found relief. Not far away the Church and the chapel of the martyrdom of Sant'Ansano da Siena.
