24T1 Biancalana tour

Messer Pietro Biancalana, a heroic citizen of Sinalunga, headed a popular revolt and succeeded in repelling the Spanish troops under Cosimo I de' Medici.  It was the sixteenth century and the war of Siena was in full swing.

Sinalunga remembers the character every year with a party and therefore could not miss a path that recalls this important historical fact.

The roads chosen are all secondary and paved and therefore you can easily cover them in a single day with any bike.

The GATE of Sinalunga is located near the train station and therefore very convenient for those arriving by train.
We leave the plain and after less than 5 kilometers we meet the crossroads that leads to Farnetella, an authentic medieval village where «there is nothing to consume but only to live». The nature around Farnetella is intact with olive trees, vines and woods of oaks and holm oaks.
At the meeting with the road of Collalto there is the highest point of the journey with its 541 meters above sea level. Trequanda, a delightful village perched on a hill overlooking Val di Chiana, presents itself with the majestic castle of the Cacciaconti family and the beautiful Romanesque church of Saints Peter and Andrew.
The precious oil constitutes, together with the breeding to the wild state of the bovines of Chianina breed, the gold of the territory with its curiosities like the Tower of the Windmill, a pigeon-house of the eighteenth century with 500 nests of terracotta.

From Trequanda one soon turns onto a road that leads to the place called Piazza di Siena where an Etruscan highland settlement with several circles of walls came to light.
The meeting with SP57 leads immediately to Abbadia Sicille, today an elegant resort, and then, in a fast and beautiful descent, we reach the farm Amorosa, a small village of 1300 transformed into a charming hotel.
The nearby village of Rigaiolo is of a different fabric, where one can perceive the character of the authentic and industrious people of Chiana.
Sinalunga is just a stone's throw away but we avoid going back in the direction of Poggio Adorno not far from Camporlecchio where there is the Borgo della Conoscenza, a center of excellence for training and business culture.
Once arrived at Colle Alto, the crossroad indicates the road to Scrofiano, twin village of Farnetella and magnificent pearl surrounded by olive trees and woods. Along the steep road that leads to the village is frequent to find men and women throwing the druzzola, the ancient «poor man's game» and still today object of dispute between communities that have not lost the memory.
Scrofiano offers a medieval urban structure and an immense view of Val di Chiana plain, subject, as witnessed by Leonardo da Vinci, to continuous swamping until the Renaissance. For the curious we recommend a short excursion near the sports field where there is a shy and forgotten waterfall of 4 meters with clear water.
Sinalunga can be reached after a few kilometers and it is worthwhile to climb up to the historic center that preserves traces of the ancient walls, the Praetorian Palace and beautiful churches such as the nearby Franciscan convent of Poggio Baldino. At the table you can find gastronomic excellences without equal: from pici all'aglione della Valdichiana, to Chianina meat up to Cinta Senese cold cuts, a real feast of taste.
