For the inhabitants of Berardenga, Oltrarbia means the wing of the Grand Duke's butterfly plunging from the river Arbia completely into the Chianti Classico territory until it meets the ancient route of Romea Sanese.

Like its twin wing of Berardenga, the route is dotted with small historic villages, villas, castles and ancient churches and is wonderfully marked by the work of the peasants, with farms built in the last centuries of the last millennium and dry stone walls, placed along the roads and «well-groomed» fields, make the territory, marked by 50 kilometers of mostly dirt roads, a unique habitat to be traveled slowly with suitable bikes and a fair amount of training.

The journey is proposed in two stages, but the POINT of Vagliagli, which is encountered twice at kilometers 16 and 32, is an excellent base for a stop.

Pianella - Quercegrossa

Distance

First easy stretch along the paved road that leads to Ponte a Bozzone with a detour to Villa Geggiano, the home of the great archaeologist-intellectual Ranuccio Bianchi Bandinelli and Pope Alexander III. A place that has remained the same as it was at the time of the stays of Vittorio Alfieri, who, before going to visit the noble ladies in Siena, rehearsed his works in the “teatro di verzura”. Villa Geggiano and the nearby Certosa di Pontignano were also the favorite places of Renato Guttuso and many intellectual friends of Ranuccio Bianchi Bandinelli. From Geggiano you soon get back on the dirt road and, after passing Borgo Scopeto, a place of good drinking and sweet sleeping, you reach Vagliagli, an ancient village that takes its name from the wild garlic that grows in the surrounding countryside. From Vagliagli you take the road to Cignano and you reach the GATE of Quercegrossa along a lonely dirt road through farms and wonderful views.

From Quercegrossa we take the road for Casafrassi and Castellina up to Fonterutoli and then redirect towards Vagliagli, soon reaching the Etruscan necropolis of Poggino. The natural environments encountered alternate with agricultural environments expertly maintained. The lost village of Palagio is located in the steep descent that leads to the road to the farm-castle of Aiola, former home of one of the fathers of the nation, Senator Giovanni Malagodi. After the stop near the picturesque village of Vagliagli, the road deviates towards the dirt road of Carpineto and it leads to Dievole, one of the farms where a lot of money has been invested and that in the last years has been able to make itself known in the world for its wines and hospitality. Inside the property there is also a nice route equipped for MTB. From Dievole it is possible to go down towards the Arbia valley and then go up, skirting the countryside of Selvole, up to the ancient Pievasciata where you can find the most modern and creative museum of modern art, the «Chianti Sculpture Park» rich in works of art perfectly integrated with the landscape.
Returning to Pianella is now easier from the cycling point of view, but there are still many things to see: from the ruins of Cerreto to Villa Catignano with its beautiful Italian garden that invites you to take a restful break. The GATE of Pianella can be reached from San Giovanni a Cerreto, going backwards along the paved road. During the summer, a swim in the communal swimming pool can be a good appetizer before tasting the excellent local products and learning that the town is the center of snail breeding from which the «snail slime» is obtained, with its surprising therapeutic and cosmetic properties.
