Grand Tour GFNY Italia

A beautiful cycling event is held every year on the route that from Valdichiana reaches the Crete and Val d'Orcia: the Gran Fondo New York Italy, which attracts fans from all over the world.

A little over one hundred kilometers among the hills with three stretches of striking dirt roads that can be dealt with any type of bike.  There are many and many more who return because what they have seen in the race deserves to be seen and enjoyed with due calm.

In fact, the variety of natural and agricultural landscapes and the historical evidence ranging from the Etruscans, the Romans, the Middle Ages, through the Renaissance to the rural civilization, are extraordinary and deserve a few days of pleasant exploration.

Montepulciano, an admirable example of Renaissance city, is the heart of the journey but it is not the only pearl as the route allows you to visit medieval villages, farms, churches and castles of great charm.

Not to forget the wines, starting from the Nobile, the precious oil, the truffle and the Chianina meat.  A destination worth seeing but insidious because you can stay there all your life.

Itinerario e Tappe

Stage
1
Montepulciano (San Biagio) - Torrita di Siena
Easy
Distance
12.40Km
Height difference
145m+
It is worth starting from the temple of San Biagio, a masterpiece of the Renaissance at the foot of the city, and then head towards Torrita, a characteristic village of the Valdichiana, where the typical medieval old town is counterpointed by the brick houses of the local furnaces. A fairly easy stage.
Stage
2
Torrita di Siena - Trequanda
Medium
Distance
29.90Km
(42.30Km/tot.)
Height difference
691m+
(836.00m+/tot.)
The road becomes increasingly challenging, lonely and fascinating with the first stretches of dirt road. After passing the junction for the impregnable village of Montefollonico, which would be worth a detour, we proceed towards Trequanda meeting the charming village of Castelmuzio, of Etruscan-Roman origins and Montisi, with its Grancia and its fine olive oil. There are some double digit slopes and a stop at the GATE of Trequanda, in the shadow of the Cacciaconti castle, is a must.

From Trequanda to Torrenieri the road becomes easier. We are in Crete Senesi and in San Giovanni d'Asso the scent of the precious truffle is present as never before. In the valley runs the old railway where periodically puffs the «Treno Natura» which finds its first station in Torrenieri, crossroads of the Francigena. From Torrenieri the road becomes more challenging and climbs towards the castle of Cosona to enter back into Val d'Orcia and then find the road that leads back to Valdichiana and the GATE of Torrita from where, if you wish, you can deviate and take the Vinsanto Trail. But this is a real transgression.

The road leading to Montepulciano is the same as the one we took at the beginning. Only one variant: you arrive right in the center of the refined Renaissance city among wineries and magnificent historic buildings. Be careful, however, because the last 500 meters reach 605 meters with an 18% slope and leave the throat dry and ready to be watered with a good glass of Vino Nobile.
